Athletic career

Lutz Blankenburg, who formerly came to 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig from the company sports association (BSG) Traktor Taucha, became GDR junior champion in 1974 with the Leipzig club . In the games of the junior league he was called up both in defense and in midfield. At the beginning of 1974 he was appointed to the squad of the GDR junior national team, for which he played six international matches by June 1974. After two appearances as a substitute, he was used in the defense in the following games. After Blankenburg had already completed a league game for the 2nd team of 1. FC Lok in the second-rate GDR league in the 1973/74 season , he was officially included in the squad of the 2nd team for the 1974/75 season. Of the 22 league games, Blankenburg played 17 games in which he played mainly in defense. He appeared twice as a goal scorer. Since the team had to relegate at the end of the season, Blankenburg's career in GDR-wide football was interrupted for several years. Although he became champion after a year in the third-class district league with Lok Leipzig II, the second teams of the upper division clubs were transferred to the newly established junior league , for which the almost 21-year-old Blankenburg was no longer eligible to play.

It was not until the 1979/80 season that Blankenburg reappeared in higher-class football when he appeared in the squad of the relegated league chemistry Bohlen . He established himself in the defense as a regular player, but was only able to play 14 of the 22 leagues due to injury (1 goal). As a season winner, BSG Chemie participated in the promotion games to the league, which led to immediate promotion. Blankenburg was used five times in the eight qualifying games. Although officially reported for the 1980/81 league season, Blankenburg was not used in the league games.

For the 1981/82 season, Blankenburg moved to the district division BSG Motor Grimma , where he stayed in the third division until 1984. It was not until 1984 that he rose to the GDR league with BSG Motor. In the GDR league seasons 1984/85 to 1986/87 Blankenburg had a regular place as a Libero , of the 102 played point games he played 80 games. In the 1985/86 season he was BSG Motor's top scorer with nine goals. In the seasons 1987/88 and 1988/89 Blankenburg only made a total of 13 league appearances. When Motor Grimma was relegated to the GDR league in 1989, Blankenburg's career in higher-class football was over. Within eight seasons in the GDR league, he had 125 missions and 19 goals.
