Lutz Michael Wegner (born October 11, 1949 in Weinsberg , Heilbronn district ) is a German computer scientist .

Life

Lutz Wegner graduated from the Williston Northampton School in Easthampton, Massachusetts (1968) and passed the German Abitur in 1969 at the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium Heilbronn . From 1969 to 1974 he studied industrial engineering at the University of Karlsruhe and then went for two years as a doctoral student to the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver , BC, Canada, and finally in 1977 in Karlsruhe with the doctoral thesis "Analysis of two- level grammars ”with Hermann Maurer and Thomas Ottmann . In 1982 the habilitation followed with a habilitation thesis on Quicksort variants and the granting of the venia legendi in Karlsruhe. Reviewers were Thomas Ottmann, Wolfgang Janko and Jan van Leeuwen (Utrecht).

After teaching assignments and substitute professorships in Würzburg, Kaiserslautern, Turku (Finland), Osnabrück, Darmstadt and Trier, Wegner accepted a call to the Fulda University of Applied Sciences (formerly Fulda University of Applied Sciences) in 1984 and from there to the University of Kassel in 1987 , where he became C4 -Professor for databases who headed computer science in the department of mathematics / computer science. After the computer science had switched to the electrical engineering / computer science department in 2001 with his substantial involvement, he worked there in the databases / graphic user interfaces until he retired in March 2015. Lutz Wegner is divorced and has three children.

Services

Lutz Wegner began his academic career with fundamental work on van Wijngaarden grammars , also known as two-layer grammars or W grammars . The results found their way into the three-volume Handbook of Formal Languages by Arto Salomaa and Grzegorz Rozenberg . After some further work in the field of formal languages, he changed the field for the habilitation and submitted a habilitation thesis on Quicksort variants with which it was possible to achieve the lower limit for the runtime behavior of Quicksort on input data with multi-set properties, as demonstrated by Robert Sedgewick .

After a research stay at the IBM Scientific Center in Heidelberg in 1986, Wegner also dealt with the non-first normal form data model and developed a graphic editor for this purpose, which was then also the basis for work in the area of synchronous group work. A learning software “Introduction to UNIX ”, which he wrote in 1986 for the COSTOC project initiated by Hermann Maurer, was in use in Kassel until 2015, making it one of the longest actively used electronic courses. In addition to the scientific contributions, Wegner was significantly involved in the introduction of the computer science course at the University of Kassel. This started in the autumn of 2001 after Traudl Herrhausen, a member of the Hessian state parliament, succeeded in acquiring three endowed professorships for the university. Until 2013, Wegner was the spokesman for computer science at the University of Kassel in the computer science faculty day, and he was accepted as the 47th member in November 2007.
