The Lycée Turenne is a school building in the Oberwiehre area of the Wiehre district of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau . Together with the neighboring Maria-Hilf-Kirche , the neighboring Emil-Thoma-Schule and the town hall , all located in the Schützenallee, it is characteristic of the Oberwiehre with its distinctive tower. The building received its current name from the French occupying forces after the Second World War , which also used this building as a school building. As with the district of Vauban , the French name was adopted, although Turenne, as a general in the service of Louis XIV, was significantly involved in his wars of conquest .

The extensive building was built in the neo-renaissance style as a teacher’s seminar between 1905 and 1907 according to plans by the government master builder Hermann Graf from the Grand Ducal District Building Inspectorate in Freiburg. The client was the government of the Grand Duchy of Baden . The building was designed for 300 students, 180 of whom could live in the boarding school, which was located on the upper floors. The seminar was closed in 1932/33. During the 1930s, the building was used by various NSDAP organizations. From 1939 it was the Reichsgendarmerieschule.

From 1954 the building then served as a Lyceè, a grammar school for the children of the French occupation troops, who had been taught in other confiscated school buildings in the city. After the withdrawal of the French troops, the building, which originally belonged to the state of Baden, became the property of the city of Freiburg in 1992, which, after a partial renovation, uses it again for school purposes: the Richard Mittermaier School is a special educational and advisory center (SBBZ) with a focus on intellectual development, other parts are used by the Walter-Eucken-Gymnasium and the municipal music school also has rooms available there. The south-west wing and the gymnasium and festival hall have not been refurbished because the financial means are lacking and can therefore not be used despite urgent needs.
