Lycium australe a plant is art from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). It is the only species of the genus whose natural range is in Australia.
description
Lycium australe is a mostly 0.5 to 2.5 m high, but rarely only 0.2 m high, tangled, branched shrub . It is armed with spikes . The flowers are white, creamy white, blue or purple in color. The flowering period is between February and October.
Occurrence
The species is widespread in Australia and grows there on sandy and loamy soils on the edges of salt lakes and compacted clay layers.
Systematics
Molecular biological studies place the species in a clade with various species native to Africa . One clade that was strongly supported by the study consists of Lycium australe , the South African species Lycium tenue and the species Lycium gariepense, which occurs in Namibia .
