Lycium chilense is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Lycium chilense is a 0.5 to 2 m tall, upright shrub . Its leaves are hairy, 3 to 35 mm long and 2 to 8 mm wide.

The flowers are hermaphroditic and five-fold. The calyx is cup-shaped and hairy. The calyx tube is 1.5 to 2.5 mm long, the calyx lobes are 0.5 to 2.5 mm long, but mostly shorter than the calyx tube. The crown is funnel-shaped and colored white, whitish-yellow and whitish-purple. The corolla tube has a length of 2.5 to 6 mm, the corolla lobes are 3.5 to 5 mm long. The stamens are hairy.

The fruit is a red or orange, spherical to egg-shaped berry with a length of 6 to 8 mm and a width of 4 to 5 mm. It contains about five to 15 seeds per carpel .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24 or 48.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in South America and occurs there in Argentina and Chile . The locations are at heights close to sea level and at least 3470 m above sea level.

Systematics

Internal system

Eight varieties are distinguished within the species:

  • Lycium chilense var. Chilense
  • Lycium chilense var. Vergarae (Phil.) Bernardello
  • Lycium chilense var. Minutifolium (J.Rémy) Terracino
  • Lycium chilense var. Filifolium (Miers) Bernardello
  • Lycium chilense var. Comberi (CLHitchc.) Bernardello
  • Lycium chilense var. Glaberrimum Phil.
  • Lycium chilense var. Descolei F.A.Barkley
  • Lycium chilense var. Confertifolium (Miers) FABarkley

External system

Molecular biological studies place the species as a sister species to Lycium ciliatum . Both are classified in the section Schistocalyx , which are characterized by an enlarged and ciliate base of the stamens. The section is one of the few of the traditional systematics of the genus that has been confirmed by molecular biological methods. The results of the investigations also suggest that Lycium chilense is not monophyletic but contains Lycium ciliatum .
