Lycium ciliatum is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Lycium ciliatum is an upright shrub that reaches heights of 1.6 to 2 m. Its leaves can be hairy or hairless and reach lengths of 5 to 75 mm and widths of 4 to 45 mm.

The flowers are hermaphroditic and usually five-fold, rarely six-fold. The calyx is bell-shaped and can have different hairs. The calyx tube 1.5 to 2.5 mm long, the calyx lobes are longer than the calyx tube and 4 to 8.5 mm long. The crown is funnel-shaped. It is colored white and dirty white. The corolla tube has a length of 3 to 6 mm, the corolla lobes reach 3.5 to 8.5 mm in length. The stamens are hairy.

The fruit is a red or orange, spherical to egg-shaped berry with a length and width of 5 to 8 mm. 15 to 35 seeds are formed per carpel .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24 or 48.

Occurrence

The species is common in South America and occurs there in Argentina , Bolivia , Brazil and Uruguay .

Systematics

Molecular biological studies place the species as a sister species to Lycium chilense . Both are classified in the section Schistocalyx , which are characterized by an enlarged and ciliate base of the stamens. The section is one of the few of the traditional systematics of the genus that has been confirmed by molecular biological methods. The results of the investigations also suggest that Lycium chilense is not monophyletic but contains Lycium ciliatum .
