The Lycodinae are the most species-rich subfamily of the eel mother (Zoarcidae) that occurs in all oceans from the Arctic to the Antarctic . Most of the over 230 species live in the northern Pacific . There are several endemic genera there . Two species live on the coasts of Northern Europe, Norway and Iceland , Sars wolffish ( Lycodes sarsi ) and Vahls wolffish ( Lycodes vahli ).

features

Like all eel-nuts, the species of the subfamily Lycodinae have an elongated body and a terminal or lower mouth . They become 6.8 to 88 cm long.

With the exception of Taranetzella , the skin is firm and not gelatinous. The upside-down pores of the lateral line system are generally well developed, with a lateral line present in most genera. The gill opening is medium-sized and extends down to the base of the pelvic fin. With the exception of Maynea and Pachycara , all genera have pelvic fins. The dorsal fin is only supported by soft rays. The right and left frontal bones are fused together in the subfamily Lycodinae.

The individual genus are distinguished from one another on the basis of the fin formula , the coloration, the presence or absence of barbels and / or ventral fins, the arrangement of the head pores and knuckle plates and the dentition of the ploughshare and palatine bone .
