Lykinos (potters)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lykinos (Λυκινος) was a Greek potter who lived in the middle and 3rd quarter of the 5th century BC. Was active in Athens .

The Attic potter Lykinos is only known for a signed, black-varnished vessel found in Ampelokepoi , which researchers identify as both a lid pyxis and a small lekanis . It bears the signature Λυκινος ανεθκεν τη Αθηνααι το πρωτον ηργασατο - Lykinos anetheken tei Athenaai to proton ergasto and is now in the possession of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens (Inv.-No .: 2.1367) . In addition to the signature, the vessel is inscribed with the dedicatory inscription Αθενα [ιαι] [h] υγιει [αι] [Κ] αλλις εποιεσ [ε] και ανεθ [εκεν], from which Paul Kretschmer concludes that it may be a first work of Pottery , which he dedicated to the goddess Athena in Ampelokepoi.
