The white Scheinkalla ( Lysichiton camtschatcensis ), also called Asiatic Skunk Cabbage , Asiatic Giant Arum or Kamchatka Snake Root, is a species of the genus Scheinkalla ( Lysichiton ) in the Arum family (Araceae).

features

The white calla is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches a height of 70 to 100 centimeters. The rhizome is short and thick. The leaves are 30 to 100 × 15 to 30 centimeters in size, elliptical and wedge-shaped at the base of the blade. The spathe is whitish and broadly lanceolate. It measures 20 to 30 × 4 to 10 centimeters and dies at fruit time.

The flowering period extends from May to June, sometimes it begins as early as April.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

Occurrence

The area of the species includes the south of Kamchatka, Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands and northern Japan to 35 ° north latitude. It grows in swamps, swamp forests and stream banks.

use

The white calla is rarely used as an ornamental plant for pond banks, watercourses, swamp meadows and as a solitary shrub. It has been in culture since at least 1886.
