Lysmata is a genus of shrimp from the family of the cleaner and marble shrimp (Hippolytidae), which occurs in flat areas of all tropical and subtropical oceans . They live mainly in coral reefs and are often active. a. as cleaner shrimp . This means that they rid fish of parasites and dead skin residues. Especially with large fish such as moray eels and groupers , they even crawl into the open mouth to remove food residues between the teeth.
They mostly live in caves, crevices or under coral overhangs . Many species have striking colors that allow the fish that need to be cleaned to spot them. In addition, they perform noticeable movements that invite you to clean.
Lysmata species are protandric simultaneous hermaphrodites , i.e. hermaphrodites. There is no definite male or female. Two animals can fertilize each other's eggs. Ovaries and testicular tissue are present in every shrimp.
The animals are popular with marine aquarists because they are easy to keep.
