The cardinal shrimp ( Lysmata debelius ), also known as cardinal shrimp or fire shrimp , a strikingly colored shrimp species from the genus ( Lysmata ) within the family of the cleaner and marble shrimp (Hippolytidae). It grows up to 5 cm and is particularly noticeable because of its red color.
The animals are mainly found in the Indo-Pacific , off the Maldives and in the Central Pacific . Like all species of the genus Lysmata, it cleans fish, but not as extensively as the white-banded cleaner shrimp.
Appearance
The up to 5 cm large animals have a red to dark red color, as well as six antennae and six legs, about two thirds of which are white. There are also four gripping tools on the front part of the body. Pacific cardinal shrimp have several white spots on the carapace , animals from the Indian Ocean also on the abdomen . The Line Island population has red legs.
Aquarium keeping
Cardinal's cleaner shrimp are very popular pets for saltwater aquariums , especially because of their bright colors. However, they live more hidden than their relatives like the white-banded cleaner shrimp. They should be kept in aquariums from a size of at least 50 liters and, like all shrimp, be adapted very slowly to the density of the water. The animals accept Artemia , frozen food , flake food and Mysis as food , but also mussel meat and other seafood.
