The V63 series of Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) is the strongest in Hungary built electric locomotive . She is nicknamed "Gigant".
history
By the end of the 1970s, 20 percent of the entire route network in Hungary was electrified. Therefore it became necessary to develop a locomotive for heavy passenger and freight trains . In 1971, MÁV commissioned Ganz-Mávag to manufacture a thyristor locomotive that could be used for heavy trains up to the turn of the millennium . The first "giant" began its service in 1975. The first two prototypes (001 & 002) were still equipped with electronics from the West. The last locomotive was the V63-056.
Although it is considered a powerful locomotive in Hungary, it is also one of the weakest six-axle locomotives in the world. The advantages: easy to use, relatively quiet and very reliable.
In the early 1990s, route 1 ( Budapest - Győr - Hegyeshalom ) was modernized and the speed increased. Since the MÁV did not have a high-speed locomotive at that time, ten units of the V63 series were converted. The new locomotives were given the initial number "1" and are designed for 160 km / h. Up until the use of the 1047 series, international train services to Vienna were covered with this series.
commitment
The V63 series is stationed in Budapest-Ferencváros, Nyíregyháza , and Dombóvár and mostly haul international express trains and heavy freight trains. The modernized vehicles will be used on the Budapest- Hegyeshalom route.
