content

The story begins in Tokyo: 14-year-old Ginta Toramizu has been falling asleep during class for some time and keeps dreaming the same dream of trying to protect a princess from a monster. He wakes up every time in a dream he raises his dagger with a battle cry - and realizes that he is standing on his table and has actually uttered this battle cry! The penalty for this is to run several laps on the sports field each time, which always exhausts the physically weak Ginta. In addition, everyone except his girlfriend Koyuki makes fun of him. This changes when a portal into another dimension appears in the classroom through which Ginta is supposed to run. Ginta, enthusiastic about the dreams, does not hesitate and walks through.

He finds himself in the world of Mar Heaven, where the first thing he sees is a knight running towards him. Ginta strikes reflexively and realizes that his blow had a significant effect. Immediately afterwards he meets the first person: the witch Dorothy. She tells him about so-called poor, magical, sometimes even living weapons and that she wants to find a legendary poor named Babbo. Ginta and Dorothy find the poor man's whereabouts. While Dorothy defeats the arm guarding Babbo, Ginta eagerly opens the chest and is disturbed to find that Babbo looks just a metal ball catching game with two eyes and a long nose. Dorothy, disappointed with Babbo's appearance, leaves Babbo Ginta and says goodbye to him.

As the events unfold, Ginta met more and more people, some of whom joined him: Jack, Alviss, Dorothy, Alan, Nanashi, Edo and Snow. At the beginning this is enclosed in a block of ice. When Ginta, led by Edo, goes to the location of their prison, he is amazed to see that Snow is a complete likeness of his girlfriend Koyuki. He manages to free her with the help of a fire arm, but because of their trajectory during the liberation, Ginta and Snow kiss, whereupon Ginta faints and Snow turns red. Snow and Dorothy, whose path again crossed Gintas, join the group.

After Snow is freed, Koyuki begins to fall asleep again and again during class, for which she receives the same punishment as Ginta before. In her sleep, however, she dreams of Mär Heaven and experiences the events there from the point of view of Princess Snow. She then always reports this to Ginta's mother.

After a few adventures, a fighting tournament begins: various fighters against the members of a dangerous association called "Chessboard". In these fights, Ginta and his companions, who are the only ones to qualify for the tournament duels, have to win against the members of the chessboard, because the fate of all of Mar Heaven depends on it.

People and groups

Mar

The group “Mär” consists of Ginta and his companions. You will have to take on the chessboard during tournaments to defeat the chessboard.

Ginta Toramizu

Ginta is originally from Japan. In Mär Heaven, his powers are 8 times as strong as in his world, which is often of use to him in the face of his opponents. He is the leader of Mär and was brought to Mär Heaven with the help of a dimensional arm named Pierrot to play against the chessboard. He has only one arm, Babbo, who, with the help of special magic stones, is capable of many things and enables him to win all his fights. In addition, Babbo can speak and think herself.

Jack

At first, Jack is just a simple farm boy Ginta's age. His father competed against the chessboard at the fighting tournament 6 years ago and did not return. Since then, Jack lived alone with his mother on their remote farm. Shortly after he meets Ginta, a former follower of his father comes and hands him the arm that he used at the time. Jack decides to join Ginta and avenge his father's death. Since his mother only taught him what was necessary for life on the farm, he embarrassed himself in his first tournament match against a girl named Pano because he was not taught how to treat girls. The second time, however, he no longer repeats his wrongdoing.

Alviss

Alviss is another boy Ginta's age. It was he who brought Ginta to Mär Heaven with Pierrot, since the people from the other world in Mär Heaven are 8 times stronger than in their world and at most such a person would be able to fight the phantom, the leader of the chessboard, to win in the final fight, which is absolutely necessary for victory. Several years ago Alviss lost his parents who were killed in the war caused by the chessboard: Alviss lost his composure and ran uncontrollably towards the phantom and yelled at him why he was doing this. The phantom, impressed by Alviss 'courage, occupied Alviss with an arm with the "seal of the phantom" instead of an answer, which would spread to Alviss' body and, if it covered the entire body, would transform him into an immortal being, a phantom which would make him and the Phantom friends. The horrified Alviss wanted to take his own life, but was stopped by Alan. Now he's looking for a way to get rid of the phantom's seal.

Dorothy

Dorothy is a wind ruler from the town of Gardea. While she is friendly, she also has a cruel and terrifying side. She has an older sister named Diana who left Gardea several years ago. Later in the tournament, she learns that Diana is the "queen", the actual head of the chessboard.

Snow

Snow is the princess of Lestower Castle. It is a reproduction of Ginta's friend Koyuki. Her mother died giving birth, Diana became her stepmother. After a few years later she received the prophecy that she must leave Lestower Castle immediately and only return when she has found seven companions, she fled from Lestower Castle. This later became the headquarters of the chessboard. Snow has an arm that allows her to make snowmen of all sizes appear. Since these can also fall from the sky, despite their harmless appearance they have a one-time pounding function.

Nanashi

Nanashi used to be the leader of the Luberia robbers' guild. However, its members were killed by Peta, the right hand of the phantom; only Nanashi and two other members survive because they were not present at the time of the incident. Nanashi decides to take revenge on the chessboard and kill the murderer of his people. Because of this, he joins Ginta. In addition to a lance, he has an arm that generates electricity and allows him, for example, to let lightning strike his opponent.

Alan

Alan used to be number 2 in the Cross Guard. During the tournament 6 years ago, his fight against Halloween, one of the top knights on the chessboard, came to a draw. Alan was cursed by Halloween and fused into Edo's body. Since then, it has only appeared when Edo fell asleep 3 times; the next time he fell asleep after his appearance, Edo would reappear. Ginta separates him and Edo using Babbo's fourth form, Holy Poor Alice.

Edo

Edward, or Edo for short, is a talking dog and the "protector" of Princess Snow. Because he has no poor and special workers, he did not take part in the qualifying rounds and therefore does not fight in the tournament. Still, he belongs to the group.

Luberia

Luberia is a former robbers' guild from Mar Heaven, whose leader was Nanashi. The members of Luberia were looking for the poor Babbo. When Peta appeared and told them to stop looking, they believed it was a bad joke and attacked Peta, not knowing that he was on the chessboard. He then killed her and left the mark on the chessboard before leaving. When Nanashi found out about the murder of his guild, he vowed to avenge his people and kill Peta.

Cross Guard

The Cross Guard is a combat force made up of many fighters. Its members competed against the chessboard in the first tournament match.

Alviss
Alan
Gaira

The oldest member of the Cross Guard. He fought the chessboard during the first tournament. At the new tournament, however, he had lost to a jumper in the qualifying phase and was therefore eliminated.

Further

Besides Alviss, Alan and Gaira, the Cross Guard had many other members. However, they were all inferior in the qualifying phase of the new tournament.

Chess board

The chessboard is an association of many dangerous, often cruel people. The members are divided into ranks according to their strengths. These go from the king to the pawn, which is where the name "chessboard" comes from. The rank of a member can be recognized by an earring in the shape of a chess piece (with the exception of the bishop's rank; the bishop's earrings are not pawns, but shields with a cross in the middle). However, the king, queen and phantom do not have earrings.

reception

Jason Thompson calls the manga a "predictable but amusing, quickly told" story in "boldly drawn" characters and an interesting setting. Many characters are based on well-known fairy tales and legends. Some elements of the series have been recycled from the Recca no Honō previously created by the author , but are now packaged more skillfully and the adventurous mood of the story works better than the put-on teasing of Recca .
