Mártires is a Portuguese municipality ( freguesia ) in the 1st Bairro of the capital Lisbon . Half of the municipality forms the district of Chiado and got its name from the Basílica de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires .
With its 356 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011) it is the smallest municipality in the city. However, it has a strong concentration of cultural institutions. The São Luis Theater and the São Carlos Opera , the Museum of Modern Art ( Museu do Chiado ) and the Art Faculty of the University of Lisbon are located in this municipality . The Catholic radio station Rádio Renascença is also based here.
