Máximo San Román Cáceres (born April 14, 1946 in Cuzco , Peru ) is a Peruvian mechanical engineer , entrepreneur and former politician .

Life

San Román served as Vice President of Peru from July 28, 1990 to April 21, 1992 under the government of the authoritarian President Alberto Fujimori . Between 1992 and 1993 he was de jure President of Peru. San Román entered the politics of his country in 1990 when he ran for the presidential election with Fujimori. He was then elected first vice president and senator for a five-year term. Due to the large number of votes, he was elected President of the Senate and sworn in as such.

During a visit to the Dominican Republic in April 1992, President Fujimori carried out a so-called “self-coup” in Lima. During this coup, Congress was dissolved and public judicial and prosecutorial institutions were closed. San Román returned to Peru to claim the presidency. He was sworn in as president on April 21, 1992 by the dissolved Congress. Even if this procedure was constitutional, Fujimori had public support on his side and thus had real authority in the country. His tenure as de jure President of Peru formally ended with the appointment of Fujimori as constitutional president by the new Congress.

Then San Román was re-elected to Congress (1995-2000). He ran again for the presidency in 2000 , but received only 36,000 votes. In total, San Román ran four times for the Peruvian vice presidency. The first time in 1990 under Alberto Fujimori, then in 1995 under Ricardo Belmont, the third time with Humberto Lay in 2006 and the fourth time under Pedro Pablo Kuczynski in 2011 .

He is married and has five children.
