The Girls Choir Hamburg is a vocal ensemble in which girls and young women up to the age of 23 perform musical works. The choir has received a number of awards and regularly undertakes international choral tours.

History and activities

The Girls' Choir Hamburg was founded in August 2003 by Gesa Werhahn. The sponsor is the Staatliche Jugendmusikschule Hamburg im Mittelweg , in whose rooms the choir also rehearses.

The Hamburg Girls Choir has performed in concerts in a number of Hamburg concert venues and main churches, including in Laeiszhalle , State Opera , Kulturkirche Altona , Bucerius-Kunstforum , Rathaus as well as St. Michaelis , St. Petri , St. Jacobi , St. Katharinen . The girls' choir worked with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra , the Hamburger Camerata and the Ensemble Elbtonal and contributed to CD recordings and radio reports.

An important part of the choir's work are the concert tours that the choir takes to Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Iceland, Israel, Qatar, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, South Africa, Swaziland, Hungary, the Faroe Islands, the United Arab Emirates and the Oman led.

structure

The choir school consists of around 200 girls aged four and over, whose vocal and musical development is encouraged. The Hamburg Girls Choir is divided into four different age and ability levels:

  • Pre-choir: girls between 4 and 6 years of age
  • Children's choir: girls from 7 years
  • Youth choir: girls from 10 years
  • Concert choir: Girls from 14 years of age with special choral experience and commitment

Choir direction

The Hamburg Girls Choir is under the overall direction of Gesa Werhahn and Christoph Pillat. The preliminary and children's choirs are led by Maren Hagemann-Loll, the youth and concert choir by Gesa Werhahn.

Gesa Werhahn (* 1975) studied school music, piano and conducting at the music academies in Lübeck (MHL) and Hamburg (HfMT) and history at the University of Hamburg . She teaches as Oberstudienrätin music and history at Hamburg Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium , a school with Musikzug . Gesa Werhahn has been responsible for the vocal class there since 2013. At the Hamburg University of Music and Theater (HfMT), she teaches children's choir conducting.
