Jens Michow (born August 16, 1950 in Lübeck ) is a German lawyer and specialist book author ; In 2013, together with Johannes Ulbricht, he published a basic handbook on event law, published by CH Beck in 2013, which has since been considered the standard work on this topic.

Life

After graduating from high school in Timmendorfer Strand in 1969 , Jens Michow studied law at the University of Hamburg . In 1974 he broke off his studies and founded an artist agency. Subsequently, Michow worked as a manager and agent for artists (including Fats Domino , Gloria Gaynor and Gheorghe Zamfir ), later as a tour organizer and owner of one of the first German independent labels.

In 1984 Michow resumed his law studies at the University of Hamburg and graduated in 1990 with the second state examination in law. In 1992 Michow settled in Hamburg as a lawyer.

In 1985 Michow founded the Federal Association of the Event Industry (bdv) e. V., of which he was President and Managing Director until December 31, 2018. Effective January 1, 2019, the bdv merged with the Association of German Concert Directors (VDKD) e. V. The merged association bears the name of the Federal Association of the Concert and Event Industry (BDKV) e. V. Michow is the executive president of the association.

As Vice President of the German Music Council , Michow contributed between 2003 and August 2004 to the creation of fundamentally new legal structures for the largest cultural association in Germany. In 2006 Jens Michow co-initiated the Live Entertainment Award industry prize; he is the managing director of the LEA - Live Entertainment Award Committee e. V. as well as the LEA - Live Entertainment Award Veranstaltungs GmbH. The Live Entertainment Award has been presented annually to concert organizers and artists since 2006. Since 2009, Michow has headed the event management compensation association founded by the Federal Association of the Event Industry with the Artists ' Social Fund, an association of association members to simplify the payment of the artists' social security contribution. With effect from January 1, 2019, the equalization association was transferred to the BDKV.

Among other things, together with the Italian organizer association Assomusica, Michow helped found the European umbrella organization European Live Music Association (ELMA), which is based in Brussels. Michow has been vice president of the association since then.

In 2013, Jens Michow and Johannes Ulbricht published a basic handbook on event law, published by CH Beck in 2013, which has since been considered the standard work on this topic. It received, among other things, in the Neue Juristische Wochenschrift from lawyer and notary Peter Raue , in the magazine for copyright and media law from lawyer Stefan Ernst, in the specialist magazine MusikWoche from Manfred Gillig-Degrave and in the magazine archive for copyright and media law UFITA from Lawyer Tilo Gerlach positive reviews.

Teaching

Jens Michow was a lecturer in cultural management at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater from 1990 to 2002 . Since autumn 2010 he has been a lecturer at the University of Music and Theater Munich and was appointed honorary professor by the Free State of Bavaria in July 2013. He was visiting lecturer at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg (2005 to 2010) and the German Lawyers Academy (2006 to 2009).

Memberships

In his capacity as President of the Federal Association of the Event Industry, Jens Michow is a member of the Advisory Board of the Artists' Social Fund and a member of the Supervisory Board of the Musik gGmbH initiative launched in 2008 by the Commissioner for Culture and Media . Michow has been a member of the tax committee of the German Cultural Council since April 2019.
