Peter Raue (born February 4, 1941 in Munich ) is a German lawyer , notary , art lover and promoter. From 1977 to 2008 Raue was chairman of the Association of Friends of the National Gallery . Raue has been an honorary professor of copyright law at the Free University of Berlin since 2005 .

life and work

Raue grew up in Munich and graduated from high school there . Because his biological father Wolfgang Vrieslander in the diction of the Nazis one half-Jew was, his parents were forbidden marriage in the 1941st Raue only found out about his father's identity at the age of 35. In 1961 he began studying law, theater studies and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin . Even in his youth, he liked to take on eloquent public speaking roles such as class representative, school representative and AStA chairman. But his acquaintance with the ensemble of the Hamburg theater, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus , dissuaded him from his previous dream of becoming an actor. Since then he has lived in Berlin. Raue is a member of around 20 sponsorship groups from important artistic institutions, and since it was founded, he has also supported the cultural and political Freya von Moltke Foundation .

Law

In 1965 he passed his first state examination in law, followed by his doctorate in law with Karl August Bettermann in 1967 . He opened his first law firm as a lawyer specializing in copyright, competition and press law in 1971. Between 2001 and 2010 he was a senior partner at the international law firm Hogan & Hartson LLP , headquartered in Washington . As part of the merger of Hogan & Hartson with Lovells, Peter Raue left the law firm and, together with around 40 other lawyers from the Berlin and Munich offices of Hogan & Hartson, founded his own law firm called Raue LLP.

He has been a lecturer at the Free University of Berlin since the summer semester of 1998, and from the summer semester of 2005 onwards, Raue has been an honorary professor of copyright law.

Law and art

Raue has been involved in many lawsuits for major art and prominent artists. Among other things, he represented Heiner Müller in the dispute with the Brecht heirs and was also involved in transforming the Berliner Philharmoniker into a foundation .

In 2002 he represented the Bild editor- in- chief Kai Diekmann in the so-called " penis trial " against the daily newspaper taz . In the long-standing dispute over the management of Suhrkamp Verlag , Raue represented the interests of the majority owner and publisher Ulla Unseld-Berkéwicz against the minority shareholder Hans Barlach .

In 2016, Raue won the so-called "Berghain judgment", which the Berlin techno club Berghain ascribes to high culture , which is widely recognized in the club and electronic music scene . With its judgment of September 6, 2016 (5 K 5089/14), the Berlin Finance Court followed the opinion of Berghain's representative Raue and judged the performances of the DJs who are respected in the techno and house scene during club nights as musical performances of artistic importance. This eliminates the previously applied high sales tax of 19 percent; instead, the reduced tax rate of seven percent applies as for theaters, museums and concerts.

Raue represented the interests of the highly controversial theater scholar and curator Chris Dercon , who succeeded Frank Castorf as director of the Volksbühne Berlin in 2017 on the initiative of the then Secretary of State for Culture Tim Renner (SPD) , but whose contract was terminated again in 2018.

art

In 2002 he was able to convince the director of the Museum of Modern Art , Glenn Lowry, to give around 200 paintings from the MoMA painting collection to Berlin as an exhibition during the renovation of the main building in New York. With a record number of 1.2 million visitors, the extended exhibition ended after seven months in September 2004, making it the most successful exhibition in Europe for many years. The popular success earned him the nickname "Mr. MoMA ". Raue is not only legally committed to art and culture nationwide, but has also been one of the central figures of Berlin's cultural life for decades.

When the corresponding department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art was also renovated in the summer of 2007, Raue succeeded again in bringing a collection of 150 paintings of 19th century French art to the Neue Nationalgalerie for the duration of the renovations (four months) (“ Die most beautiful French come from New York »). For Raue, this exhibition also marked his departure from the chairmanship of the Association of Friends of the National Gallery after 31 years; he announced his retirement from the board in 2008. On March 10, 2008, the former Minister of State for Culture Christina Weiss took over this task.

Raue is now presenting 600 paintings in the firm's Berlin office on Potsdamer Platz in the Kollhoff Tower . In the summer of 2016, Raue's art collection was on public display for the first time in the Zehlendorfer Haus am Waldsee .

It was often and consistently hoped that Raue would one day assume the office of Berlin's Senator for Culture or State Secretary. But Raue always refused, because a political office would always bring him criticism that he could not bear.

family

Raue has two children from his first marriage, the Berlin painter Rebecca Raue became famous. He has been married to Andrea Countess Bernstorff since February 2006.
