The Mädchenkantorei Basel (MKB) is a Swiss girls' choir that has made a name for itself as a choir school and concert choir beyond the Basel region and Switzerland since 1991 .
Behind the choir performances of the girls' choir is a choir school, which girls from four years of age can enter. They are supported on five levels by the musical director Marina Niedel and other specialists. In parent-child singing, children from the age of 6 months can have their first musical experiences. The Bordoni vocal ensemble is open to young women as a Basel women's choir.
The goals are to enjoy singing, to get in touch with musically demanding choral literature from different styles, to impart in-depth knowledge of music and to promote talent and ability. The choir appears as a whole as well as in individual concerts of the stages or in co-productions.
Two main concerts take place in the Basel region every year. In addition, there are regular concerts and projects in cooperation with the Basel Theater , the Basel Symphony Orchestra and with Basel choirs, as well as smaller performances (e.g. church services) with parts of the choir. In addition, concert tours are carried out at home and abroad, also at the invitation of festivals (including Lucerne Festival , Murten Classics). The MKB is an integral part and host of the European Youth Choir Festival in Basel.
The Mädchenkantorei Basel is the initiator of the network for girls choirs Germany Austria Switzerland, a member of the Swiss Choir Association, the Swiss Federation Europa Cantat, FrauenBasel and the European Choral Association .
The Girls' Choir Basel is under the patronage of the Society for the Good and Charitable Basel (GGG). It is also borne by membership fees and government subsidies .
Choir steps
Parent-child singing • from 6 months
The parent-child singing takes place in cooperation with the Knabenkantorei Basel and is open to boys and girls. In a community, the children experience sound, voice and rhythm in a playful way, guided by an experienced singer and music teacher. With all their senses, the little ones, together with their parents or grandparents, come into contact with their own voice.
Early course • from 4 years
The early course offers girls from 4 years of age the opportunity to discover the basics of music and singing in a playful way. In songs and games, the children are introduced to music and choral singing, whereby the voice in combination with movement plays an important role. Small appearances should give the singers the opportunity to present what they have learned to an audience.
Preliminary course • from 6 years
In the preliminary course, the girls are introduced to singing and music in a playful way, and first experiences in polyphonic choral singing are made. The young singers rehearse small parts of the program that they perform at concerts.
Choir I • from 8 years
In addition to singing in a group and continuously developing polyphony, the girls learn the basics of music theory . In small performances, experiences in dealing with auditions and encounters with the audience are gained. The singers receive individual voice training , perform together with other choir levels and take part in theater performances.
Choir II • from 11 years
The goal of the second level of the choir school is - in addition to the introduction to the upscale, polyphonic choral singing and the concerts - a targeted promotion and development of singing skills through solfège (including rhythm training, ear training ) and individual voice training. The singers perform alone and together with the other choir levels as well as in theater productions and take part in choir weekends, camps and concert tours. All girls have to pass an entrance exam.
Concert choir • from 14 years
Solfège and individual voice training are continued here. The singers of the concert choir also take part in theater productions, choir weekends and camps. Studying challenging choral literature in different styles leads to concerts or staged performances and participation in festivals and concert tours at home and abroad. All girls have to pass an entrance exam.
Ensemble Bordoni • from 18 years
For experienced singers from the age of 18, the vocal ensemble offers the opportunity to expand the repertoire of women's choir literature and to develop as a soloist after passing the entrance exam . Good knowledge of music theory and Prima Vista singing as well as the ability to study independently are required. The singers will continue to receive individual voice training, and concerts at home and abroad as well as projects with the concert choir will be sought.
