The Moravian State Library ( Czech : Moravská zemská knihovna , MZK ) is a scientific library founded in 1958 in the South Moravian city ​​of Brno . With a stock of four million items, it is the second largest library in the Czech Republic after the National Library in Prague.

history

The Brno University Library was the most important of the three predecessor institutions until 1958 and independent libraries in terms of age and historical holdings. The university library originally went back to the reference library of the Society for the Promotion of Agriculture in Moravia, which was founded in 1770. In 1811 the kk Moravian-Silesian Society for the Promotion of Agriculture, Natural History and Regional Studies and, on its initiative, the Franzensmuseum Brno in 1818 . In June 1899 the state of Moravia took over the sponsorship of this library and expanded it into the Imperial and Royal State Library .

After the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918) and the establishment of the Masaryk University in Brno (1919), the Moravian State Library received the status of a state and university library on May 23, 1923 . In 1935 she received the right to deposit copies for Moravia and Silesia .

In 1958, the State Scientific Library in Brno ( Státní vědecká knihovna v Brně ) was founded through the merger of the University Library, the State Technical Library (founded in 1900 as the Library of the Technical University ) and the State Pedagogical Library (founded in 1921 as the Central Pedagogical Library) . In 1993 it was renamed the Moravian State Library. The Prague architects ONEX won an architectural competition announced in 1994 by the city of Brno and the directorate of the Moravian National Library for a new central library building. After three years of construction, the new central library was officially opened on April 2, 2001.
