Wilhelm Schram

Wilhelm Karl Schram , also Wilhelm Schramm (born April 24, 1850 in Troppau , Austrian Empire ; died December 12, 1925 in Brno , Czechoslovakia ), was a Czech librarian , historian and art historian .

Life

Schram was the son of the Brno basic relief officer and later accountant Karl Schram (* August 20, 1827, † February 3, 1880). He first attended the grammar school in Brno and studied history, German studies, classical philology and philosophy from 1869 to 1872 to become a teacher at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Vienna . After that he worked as court master for two years. From 1875 until 1877 he worked as a substitute teacher at the First German Gymnasium in Brno. He then became a supplent at the teacher training institute in Opava. Due to health problems, he had to quit his job for two years and finished school. In 1880 he invented a mnemonic system and worked for some time as a traveling mnemonics teacher , giving lectures in several cities. On April 1st, 1884, he came to the Franzensmuseum in Brno as assistant to the curator . In 1885 he was at the University of Graz Dr. phil. PhD . In 1894 he was appointed librarian. In 1899 he received the title of Imperial Councilor . As a librarian he was taken on in the national service and did a great job in the library of the museum, which later became the Moravian regional library , in 1909 he became the library director. He took care of an exact cataloging and an expansion of the book collection. He also managed the library of the German Association for the History of Moravia, for which he also acted as secretary from 1886 to 1895. In 1919 he retired.

Schram was active in a variety of ways, he put together a private portrait collection of around 1,600 portraits of well-known personalities at the time. The collection was acquired by the city of Brno in 1914. He published numerous treatises on educational, regional and art historical topics, which dealt in particular with the Moravian region. He gave lectures on mnemonics, but also on Goethe as a teacher. In addition, since 1907 he wrote articles about Moravian artists for the General Lexicon of Fine Artists from Antiquity to the Present .

He lived in Beischlägergasse No. 8 in Brno and was married to Therese (born August 9, 1853), the couple had two daughters.
