Mödlinger spring carnation

The Mödling spring carnation ( Dianthus plumarius subsp. Neilreichii ) is a very rare, endangered plant subspecies that has so far only been detected in the Mödling area . It blooms in May on the rocks above the Mödlinger Klausen and on the Anninger . The stock is designated as a natural monument and is under strict protection.

features

Compared to the species characteristics of the feather carnation or the other subspecies, the Dianthus plumarius subsp. neilreichii by the following features:

It usually forms compact cushions and reaches heights of 15 to 25, rarely up to 30 centimeters. The leaves are clearly frosted. The stem leaves are 0.9 to 1.1 times (rarely 0.6 to 1.3 times) as long as the internode following them .

The inflorescences usually have one to three, rarely six flowers. The radial symmetry flowers are five-fold. The outer calyx always has blunt and briefly pointed leaf ends. The plate of the petals is divided only to 20 to 30 percent (rarely 18 to 38 percent). The color of the petals is light pink to purple pink. A throat spot is absent or, if so, weakly developed.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60 or 90.

distribution

The natural distribution area is limited to the Mödlinger Klausen and the Anninger near Mödling (Lower Austria), so the subspecies is an extremely local endemic . Here it grows mainly in northern exposed rock lawns and in light black pine -Wäldern of hill height level .

history

It was discovered and first mentioned in 1846 by August Neilreich , after whom it is also named in its scientific name. The first scientific description and name (as Dianthus neilreichii ) took place in 1908 by August von Hayek . In 1911 Gustav Hegi classified them as a subspecies .

protection

Since the Mödlinger feather carnation has its only known location on the Frauenstein, the rocks there are registered as natural monuments to protect the plants.
