The former Rosau mill (previously also Rosenau) is located in the Lower Rhine town of Rees , north of the Esserden district and south of Bienen .

In earlier times the tower served as a defense tower and has been the official seat of Drosten the Count of Kleve for about 100 years . Later, until the 18th century, the tower functioned as a windmill . Today the tower is in ruins . Roof hood and wings are missing. Little is left of the castle complex. The building has been included in the list of land and historical monuments.

history

In the second half of the 14th century, Rosau Castle was built by the Klever Counts as the official residence on the Rhine between Rees and Emmerich . The tower was originally intended as a defense tower. Access was gained with the help of a rope or wooden ladder through a raised door. In addition to the round tower on an approx. 55 m wide plateau, the castle initially consisted of other buildings and moats.

In 1384 a bailiff was named Hermann Weidegans, who administered the offices of Emmerich and Hetter (in the 19th century the former office of Hetter was then called Amt Vrasselt ). Due to the unfavorable location directly on the Rhine (flooding), the official seat of Duke Johann von Kleve was given up in 1482 and relocated to Schloss Isselburg (administrative seat from 1502).

The castle / mill changed hands several times. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Rosau mill, like the Hueth castle, belonged to the village of Bienen in the Vrasselt district. It was used as a windmill until around 1850. During the Second World War it was destroyed and not rebuilt. Today only the tower remains of the former Rosau Castle.

building

The building of the windmill stands alone and has four floors. It is incorporated into a rural courtyard. The tower is made of bricks and whitewashed. It is straight and cylindrical and rises above the Rhine dike via a wider base. The roof hood, wing cross, codend and wall are destroyed. The building is empty, the transmission and grinding gear are no longer there. There are several millstones on the outer wall.
