Mills on Bornholm
The mills on Bornholm are in three groups in the north, east and south of the island. They consist of a number of well-preserved water and windmills ; including three windmills and 13 Dutch mills and some dilapidated or unbeflügelten mills, such as the Limesgade Mill .
Watermills ( Danish Vandmøller )
Centuries ago Bornholm still had many watermills. The older horizontal mills, so-called “Platschen-Mühlen” ( Plaskemøller in Danish ), which were once widely used in Northern Europe , have been replaced by today's type of water mill with a vertical water wheel. Today there are still three intact mills of this type on Øle Å:
- Ågårds Vandmølle
- Slusegårds Vandmølle
- Vang Vandmølle, dates from 1811, operated until 1905 and was the first to be protected in 1927
Windmills ( Danish Vindmøller )
The post mill was introduced to Bornholm in the 16th century. In this type of mill, the entire mill body is turned into the wind. Today only three operational post mills still exist on the island:
The Dutch mills (also called Dutch ) were introduced to Bornholm in the mid-18th century. In the Dutch mill, only the mill hood with the wings is turned into the wind. Thirteen mills of this type still exist on the island today:
- Årsdale Mølle, in the fishing village of Aarsdale ,
- Bakkemøllen in Nexø ,
- Bornholms Valsemølle in Aakirkeby ,
- Bymøllen in Rutsker (now demolished)
- Gudhjem Mølle, at Møllebakken in Gudhjem is a cafe
- Kirkemøllen in Pedersker ,
- Kuremøllen in Østermarie ,
