The Mühlenhof , even ( Electoral ) Ross and watermill called, is a historical grain and oil mill in today Krefeld associated Linn .

The mill is located as part of a courtyard east of the old town of Linn on the outer castle and city moat . This moat, formed by the dammed Linner Mühlenbach , also served as a water reservoir for the mill .

The double drive is remarkable: Usually the grinder was driven by a water wheel; when the mill creek but did not result in enough water, there was the possibility of a Roßwerk , so one by workhorses driven Göpel to dodge.

history

The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1602, but it is assumed that the mill is as old as Linn Castle and the associated town, which the mill was used to supply. The mill was formerly, like the nearby Geismühle , a table mill of the Cologne archbishops and electors , sovereigns of the Linn office and feudal lords of Linn Castle, and enjoyed mill compulsory in the parish of Lank .

The disadvantage of the favorable location on the city moat for the water supply became evident, for example, during the Thirty Years' War : The mill was unprotected from attacks outside the city fortifications and was therefore looted several times. Eventually it was completely destroyed during the Hessian occupation of Linn (1643–45), possibly because it was in the way of an expansion of the fortifications. After that it was rebuilt in 1650 as an oil and grain mill.

After the Napoleonic conquest of the Left Bank of the Rhine , the Mühlenhof came into the possession of the Krefeld silk manufacturer Isaak de Greiff in 1805/06 as part of the secularization of the archiepiscopal property together with Linn Castle . He had the Mühlenhof expanded into a four-wing courtyard in its current form by 1816, with the watermill being integrated in the south wing and the Roßmühle in the north wing.

After Isaak de Greiff's death, the farm was inherited by his son Cornelius , who had the area along the Mühlenbach stream east of the mill converted into Greiffenhorstpark . About his niece Marianne Rhodius the court again went as an inheritance on to their cousin Maria Schell Eckes and on to her husband Conrad, who eventually sold the farm along with other possessions in Linn in 1925 to the city of Krefeld, which to date (as of 2010) owner of the Court is.

The mill, like many water mills on the Lower Rhine, had to struggle with an ever decreasing amount of water in the Mühlenbach due to the increasing canalization of rainwater and its extraction as service water. So that the mill was always ready for use, it was expanded into the Roßmühle at the beginning of the 19th century. The Roßwerk came into use more and more frequently over the years and finally the water mill operation - especially in competition with the emerging modern steam mills - became so uneconomical that it was given up around 1900. The mill wheel remained in good condition, but today - regardless of the fact that the grinder has been dismantled for a long time - it is only decorative, because the mill stream rarely has enough water to drive it.

During the Second World War, the Mühlenhof was badly damaged by bombing, but was later restored by the city of Krefeld. The mill, which is the only surviving watermill in the Krefeld area, is protected as a monument of the city (No. 24). Most recently, the roof of the mill was restored in 2004 and the half-timbered barn in 2005. The Mühlenhof now serves as a residential building and also houses a café .
