New miller's hall, back

The Müllerhalle is a former market hall in the Berlin district of Berlin-Wedding . The building was built in 1950 and was used as a market hall until 2011 . After it was demolished and rebuilt, the new miller's hall is now located there . This serves primarily as a location for a grocer, and there are also some smaller shops.

history

The market hall was created in the midst of a boom in weddings in the years of the economic miracle . The Müllerstraße where the market hall stands, was in the 1960s as Ku'damm of the North . During this time, many specialty shops and some department stores opened on the street . The north-west of Berlin had lost the last of its Berlin market halls at the beginning of the 20th century. Market halls XII and XIV - both in the neighboring district of Gesundbrunnen - were built around 1890, and by 1920 they disappeared from the address books.

The Müllerhalle was built on the site of an open market. Until 1950 there was a dog cemetery at this point , which the veterinarians Wernicke and Mey had established in 1900. The cemetery was part of a larger veterinary practice specializing in dogs, which also had several barracks for inpatient care for dogs, as well as buildings for a kennel. There were around 300 to 400 dogs in the cemetery.

In total there were two supermarkets and several shops in the Müllerhalle - from a shoemaker to a horse butcher to a drugstore - as well as 35 market stalls. There were several retail stores on the front of Müllerstrasse.

After the fall of the Wall in 1990, the purchasing power of the residents of Müllerstrasse began to decline. Several large shopping centers were opened in adjacent areas, and several businesses in the former West Berlin- based industry were shut down, affecting many people in the classic working-class district of Wedding. The hall experienced its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s, when there were long waiting lists for places in the market hall, the stalls were well attended and some of them presented an upscale range. In the last few years before the demolition, a large part of the market stalls were already empty, the operators saved on cleaning and maintenance costs. For example, the hall supervisor was dismissed and the loudspeaker announcements that drew attention to new offers disappeared. The property managers changed frequently. The building was demolished at the end of 2012.

New miller's hall 2013

The new miller's hall opened in December 2013. It has approx. 5,550  m² of retail space and approx. 5,460 m² of floor space. There is a large Kaufland supermarket on the upper floor, smaller shops and a café on the first floor and a parking garage in the rear. The architect Oliver Merz provided the designs for the building. The dark gray facade, which led to controversial reactions from residents, is particularly distinctive.
