Müller's Bartkelchmoos ( Calypogeia muelleriana ) was added to the Mniaceae by Linnaeus . Because of the small knots lying on the substrate, the water can be kept longer by capillary action. It rarely works.
Identifying features
Calypodeia muelleriana is a prostrate , about 1 to 4 mm wide and up to 4 cm long liverwort, which grows in flat blue-green to brownish-green lawns. The dense, roof-tiled, oval-shaped, rounded flank leaves are as long as they are wide, somewhat broadened at the base and mostly rounded at the tip, rarely with a small point. The misshapen hexagonal lamina cells of the flank leaves contain up to 10 small oil bodies and are about 35 to 70 µm long and 25 to 45 µm wide. The characteristic sub-leaves are about 2 to 3 times as wide as the stem, rounded, inverted-oval shaped and about 1/3 divided into two broad, rounded lobes. The cells of the sub-leaves are about 28 to 50 µm long and 18 to 35 µm wide. There is a risk of confusion with other Calypogeia species, but these should be clearly recognizable by the different types of sub-leaves.
Occurrence
Liverwort colonizes fresh to moist, shady, base-rich to moderately lime-rich areas on humus, raw soil, clay or sand, rotten wood, peat, on tree bases or on overgrounded rocks in deciduous or coniferous forests. It is often associated with Dicranella heteromalla . The moss is common all over Europe, in North Africa, North America and Greenland.
