The waste incineration facility in Kiel ( MVK ) is located in Schleswig-Holstein , the state capital of Kiel, in the Südfriedhof district .
In the waste incineration plant , household and bulky waste from private households in the city of Kiel and the surrounding area as well as household-type and other commercial waste are incinerated. The plant was opened in 1975 and technically upgraded in the 1990s (modernization: 1996).
Up to 17.5 tons of waste per hour are treated in two incineration lines. The resulting thermal energy is passed on to turbines via a water-steam system, with the help of which part of the energy is converted into electricity. The remaining thermal energy is fed into the Kiel district heating network.
Both incineration lines are equipped with a total of six flue gas cleaning systems.
