The M. Harvey Taylor Memorial Bridge , also Harvey Taylor Bridge , is a four-lane road bridge over the Susquehanna River between Harrisburg and Wormleysburg in the state of Pennsylvania of the United States . It is operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and is used by an average of 29,000 vehicles every day.

The bridge is named after the Republican politician Maris Harvey Taylor (1876-1982), who was born in Harrisburg and was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate from 1941 to 1964 . He held the position of President Pro Tempore for almost twenty years and during his tenure was also significantly involved in the realization of the first toll-free bridge to Harrisburg named after him . Construction work began on April 24, 1950, and the opening took place almost two years later on January 24, 1952.

The 1286 m long girder bridge has 24 spans of 50.7 m between the 24 river pillars in the Susquehanna and the abutment on the Harrisburg side, and an approximately 69 m long continuous beam made of profile steel over US Highway 11 and 15 between the last river pillar and the Abutment on the Wormleysburg side, which is supported by an additional ensemble of four individual pillars on the bank. In contrast to this, the main bridge consists of a sheet metal girder system , made up of 202.7 m long continuous girders between the expansion joints , which are thus arranged above every fourth pillar.

Between 2001 and 2004 the bridge was overhauled and widened. An additional cycle path was created by extending the cantilever girders that originally led to the 1.5 m wide footpath . Furthermore, the roadway was structurally separated from the now 1.2 m wide footpath and bike path by a barrier. The total width of the bridge was increased from the original 19.7 m to 22.5 m. The work also included the renewal of the road surface and the bearings as well as the painting of the steel girders.
