The M7 are electric railcars that were built by Bombardier and delivered from 2002. It is used by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on the Long Island Rail Road ( M7 ) and the Metro-North Railroad ( M7A ). The units replaced the class M1 railcars that were previously used on these routes. The multiple units are designed to operate on lines with lateral busbars . A total of 1172 cars were built for the two operators.

The cars are arranged in pairs, with each car containing a complete set of controls for a mechanic , controller or brakeman . However, the "B" carriages (identified by odd-numbered vehicle designations) contain a handicapped-accessible toilet that is larger than the toilet on the M1 and M3 railcars and can accommodate a wheelchair and a companion and / or companion ( guide , signal or assistance dog ) is sufficient. The enlarged toilet reduces the number of seats in the car.

The M7 was built in two slightly different versions due to the differences in power supply and signaling systems between the LIRR and Metro-Nord routes. While the LIRR busbars are painted from above, they are designed for Metro-North for the power consumption from below , which was already introduced by New York Central as the predecessor company . The main external difference is the color scheme on the driver's cab of each car. Metro-North's M7As have blue fronts with white stripes, while LIRR's M7s have black and yellow fronts. The M7As from Metro-North do not have illuminated license plates, but the M7 from LIRR do. The Metro North M7 were also used in the 2016 film Girl on the Train .

history

At the end of 1999, Bombardier received an order for 836 LIRR M7s. Test drives with the LIRR M7 began at the Ronkonkoma branch in early 2002. After several successful tests, passenger transportation began at the Long Beach office on October 30, 2002, and Metro-North's first M7A went into service in April 2004. All M7 were delivered in early 2007.

Accidents and incidents

  • On February 3, 2015, an M7A train on Metro-North's Harlem Line was involved in a collision with a car stopped on the tracks in Valhalla , New York . Six people were killed and at least fifteen injured. The car no. 4333 was destroyed in the subsequent fire.
  • On January 4, 2017, an M7 train crashed into a buffer stop on Route 6 of the Atlantic Terminal on the Atlantic Branch of Long Island Rail Road . The accident did not result in any deaths, but over 100 people were injured. Car No. 7553 was badly damaged in the collision after a broken rail pierced the underbody and created a large hole.
  • On February 26, 2019, an M7 train on the branch line of the LIRR to Ronkonkoma collided at a level crossing with a truck that had previously been thrown by a train from the opposite direction onto the track in the direction of Ronkoma. Car No. 7425 was the first car on the train to derail and hit the platform at Westbury Station. It was badly damaged as a result while the truck was crushed between the two trains and caught fire. Three people in the truck were killed while there were no fatalities on the train. The driver was able to escape together with a passenger in time in the back of the first car. Before the collision, the driver of the truck had an accident on a nearby road accident escape committed and had driven past the closed gates of the level crossing on the tracks.

Bug fixes

The M7 vehicles swayed back and forth more than intended when commissioned and had to be modified to reduce swaying. In late 2006, the MTA began replacing all M7 armrests after paying over $ 100,000 to customers who filed complaints. The factory-installed armrests were notorious for slipping into pockets and ripping them up when you got up. The new design has a different profile and is coated with a more fabric-friendly rubber. Some passengers complained about fewer seats per B-car, a result of the larger ADA- compliant toilets and the width of the seats. The management of Metro-North received feedback on the M7, which influenced the development of the M8 railcars for the New Haven Line .

In the fall of 2006, the M7As were experiencing serious braking problems due to fallen leaves and a condition known as "slip-slide". As a result, almost 2/3 of the Metro-Nord fleet was taken out of service due to flat spots on the wheels as a result of a blockage when braking. While the LIRR fleet performed significantly better, the M1s removed from both railways were reactivated and shortened schedules were introduced until the M7 fleet could resume full operations.

As of 2007, the fleet has the highest mean interval between failures of the entire LIRR fleet. This had in part to do with the novelty of the fleet, which is why the fleet often had to be tested for reliability .
