action

Alcoholic Rachel Watson takes the train to Manhattan every day . She passes the suburb where she used to live with her ex-husband Tom. She watches with interest the house next but one, in which what it seems to be a happy couple lives. They are Megan and Scott Hipwell. Megan is the nanny for Tom and his current wife Anna .

One day Rachel watches Megan exchange caresses with a stranger on the porch. She later sees on TV that Megan is missing. On the day of her disappearance, Rachel got off the train at her ex-husband's place of residence. When she woke up the next day with bruises and wounds, she couldn't remember what had happened. She has often had blackouts like this before , whereupon Tom always accused her of misconduct due to her alcohol consumption and made her feel guilty .

Rachel visits Scott Hipwell and tells him about her observation on the porch. He tells her that Megan is being treated by a psychologist whom Rachel thinks she recognizes in photos as the man on the porch. Rachel feels better than she has been in a long time because she has the feeling that she can help solve the case. Eventually Megan is found murdered. After Megan's psychologist has an alibi , the policewoman suspects Riley as well as Scott and Rachel.

Eventually Rachel's memories come back. She learns that Tom lied to her about the blackouts and that in truth she had no freaks. She had also seen Tom on the day in question with Megan, with whom he was dating. Tom wanted to prevent an uncovering of the relationship and hit Rachel down. Then he drove with Megan into the forest, where she told him that she - probably from him - was pregnant. An argument broke out in the course of which Tom struck Megan to death with a stone.

Rachel visits Tom and Anna at their home to confront them with the truth. Tom tries to strangle her. When she escapes, she grabs a corkscrew, which she rams into Tom's throat as he catches up with her. Anna, who observes Tom's brutality and realizes that it was a matter of self-defense, joins them and kills the still rattling Tom. Anna testifies for Rachel so she won't be punished.
