The Moscow Civil Engineering Institute, founded in 1921, emerged from the older Middle Civil Engineering School founded in 1907. The departments initially established included water supply and sewage disposal , hydrotechnical and special engineering , heating and gas supply, as well as ventilation , mechanization and automation of civil engineering .

By 1933 around 600 teachers were teaching more than 5,000 students. At this time, the first textbooks on the subjects offered by the university were written, and large research laboratories were set up for postgraduate studies . Between 1935 and 1993, the full name of the Moskovsky University was inschenerno-stroitelny institut im. WW Kuibysheva (MISI).

After the Second World War , the university's operations grew, the number of students and lecturers increased rapidly, and new departments and faculties were added, particularly for basic research . To this end, the institute entered into various scientific partnerships with Russian and foreign universities.

As one of the most interesting offers in the history of the MGSU research institute, the university highlights the student teams that have been formed annually during the summer semester since 1956 and have since been able to collect practical experience on various construction sites in Russia during their studies .

In the 1960s and 1970s, new subject areas were added, such as thermal and energy engineering , automated systems and control systems , and new student dormitories and new teaching facilities were built in the Moscow region .

Building on the experience with the institute, the Education and Methodics Association was formed in 1988, comprising 28 technical institutes and universities of civil engineering as well as thousands of industrial, polytechnical and technological Russian institutes and offshoots of these institutions. Only a few years later, in 1991, supranational oriented International Association of Institutions of Higher Education in Civil Engineering founded its rector today (June 2015) Andrei Volkov is.
