The MOB Ge 4/4 are four-axis meter gauge - electric locomotives of the Swiss Montreux-Bernese Oberland Railway (MOB), they carry the type designation Ge 4/4 and were classified under the road numbers 8001-8004 in the stock. The 8003 locomotive was sold to the Rhaetian Railway in 2019, where it will be converted into the Ge 4/4 653.
The four Ge 4 / 4s delivered by SLM and ABB in 1994 are both optically and mechanically similar to the Ge 4/4 of the Bière-Apples-Morges-Bahn (BAM) and the Ge 4/4 III of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). However, the electrical part had to be adapted to operation from the catenary with 900 V DC voltage and a possible conversion to two-system operation with an additional 15 kV 16.7 Hz. Operation with AC voltage would have been necessary if the GoldenPassLinie had been extended to Interlaken with a third rail .
The locomotive is equipped with four quick switches that supply the water-cooled converters via chokes . The input voltage of the inverters can vary from 630 to 1080 volts; for dual voltage operation the intermediate circuit voltage would have been 1350 volts. This required an adaptation of the traction motor winding compared to the RhB locomotives, which are designed for an intermediate circuit voltage of 2100 to 2800 volts. The mechanical part of the traction motor is identical to that of the RhB motors.
The locomotives have an output of 2000 kW and reach a top speed of 120 km / h , which is not achieved in normal operation due to a lack of suitable routes. Because of the relatively low voltage, very high currents are required. That is why the locomotives of the Montreux – Berner Oberland Railway always run with two pantographs on the contact wire. In addition, the pantographs are provided with three instead of the usual two contact strips.
For the later two-system operation, the locomotives were prepared for the installation of a transformer , instead ballast was installed in the throttle tank. Furthermore, the installation of a third pantograph, a main switch , a four-quadrant controller and a voltage system detection was prepared.
In the past, all four locomotives had a uniform blue and white design , but today these locomotives are also provided with advertising messages , similar to the usual RhB Ge 4/4 III. The locomotives are used exclusively with passenger trains, sometimes in the middle of shuttle trains with control cars on both sides. Multiple control with the MOB GDe 4/4 is also possible , which is only required if more than six panorama cars are to be transported. This has only happened sporadically so far.
From 2017 the three locomotives that remained with the MOB were converted to automatic central buffer couplings. Multiple control with the GDe 4/4 is temporarily no longer possible. Until the conversion or delivery of control cars with this type of coupling, they can no longer be used in shuttle trains.
