from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mozambique Transmission Company S.ARL (abbr .: MOTRACO) is a Mozambican energy supply company for the industrial energy needs of aluminum production in Mozambique. The company's administrative headquarters are in Maputo . It has been registered as a company since October 27, 2006 with an overseas office in Manchester .

history

The government of Mozambique and the Alusaf company agreed in March 1997 that an aluminum plant should be built in Mozambique .

The Mozambican government approved the "Motraco" project in March 1998 with some tax advantages.

MOTRACO was founded in October 1998 by three shareholders, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), Eskom Holdings Limited and Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC). The shareholders hold equal shares in MOTRACO.

Business activity

The main business of MOTRACO is the purchase of electrical energy from Eskom in South Africa in order to provide the Mozal aluminum smelting plants with the necessary operating energy . The energy required was originally generated in the Cahora-Bassa hydroelectric power station (HCB), which is located in the Mozambican province of Tete . With the HVDC Cahora Bassa , the electricity came into Eskom's South African network. From there, MOTRACO took over the energy needed for Mozal. In the meantime, most of Mozal's energy needs are generated at the Arnot coal-fired power station on South African territory. The Hendrina power station and the Camden power station are also involved in the deliveries . Transmission to Maputo takes place with 400 kV lines. From the Camden power station, southeast of Ermelo , the pipeline runs through the territory of Ewatini, where there is an intermediate station in Edwaleni .

The network infrastructure consists of 400 kV transformer stations and transmission lines (565 kilometers) with a voltage of 132 kV and 400 kV. This infrastructure is owned by MOTRACO. Motraco also maintains cross-border digital data transmission systems to South Africa and Eswatini .

Together with the state-run EDM, MONTRACO dominates the electrical transmission sector in Mozambique.
