The men's gymnastics club Ponarth was a sports club from the Königsberg district of Ponarth . The footballers from the south of Pregelstadt played for two years in the Gauliga , the top division in Germany at the time. In addition, the MTV booked a participation in the Tschammer Cup , the forerunner of today's DFB Cup .

history

The club from the Königsberg suburb of Ponarth was a classic multi-discipline club that initially measured itself in the competitions of the German gymnastics association . In addition to football, the Ponarther handball teams were particularly popular . Furthermore were gymnastics , fist and rounders exercised.

Despite being called a men's gymnastics club, there were also women's teams in handball and fistball.

The soccer players first appeared in the top division, the Königsberg district league , in 1921/22 . In 1922, the sports department of MTV became independent as Königsberger STV , the soccer department of Königsberger STV took over the starting place in the top division.

It was only during the Second World War in 1942 that the team was promoted to the first division. The Gauliga Ostpreußen belonged to the kickers from Palve-Platz until they were discontinued after the end of the 1943/44 season, but there always remained mediocre.

The greatest success was participation in the finals in the Tschammerpokal in 1942 . After success in the regional elimination over the VfB Osterode , the SV Prussia-Samland Königsberg and the Reichsbahn SG Königsberg , the Ponarther entered on July 19, 1942 in the first main round at the national level at VfB Königsberg . Under the direction of referee Fritz Bouillon , however, the suburb footballers had no chance against the undisputed number 1 in Königsberg football. In the 0: 6 defeat, Ponarth even contributed an own goal to the 0: 3 in the meantime.

In August 1944, with the start of the Allied air raids, club life in Königsberg came to a standstill. With the occupation of Königsberg in April 1945 by the Red Army and the subsequent flight and expulsion of the remaining German population, the association ceased to exist.

In the Federal Republic of Germany, the club lived on in a traditional community that was a member of the “ Traditionsgemeinschaft der Leichtathleten aus den deutschen Ostgebieten e. V. ”became. Born in 1938, 100 m runner Erich Maletzki was one of the best sprinters in Germany in the post-war period (in 1958 he ran 100 m in 10.5 seconds). He took part in the East Prussian Championships for MTV Ponarth , which were organized by the DLV until 1971 .
