Erich Hahn (philosopher)

Erich Hahn (born March 5, 1930 in Kiel ) is a German Marxist philosopher . He worked as a professor in the GDR until he was forced to retire in 1990 and was a member of the Central Committee of the SED .

Life

Erich Hahn is the son of an economist and graduated from high school in West Berlin in 1948 . He then worked on a state-owned estate and was a full-time FDJ functionary for a year . He joined the SED in 1951 and studied history and philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1950 to 1956 . He then worked as a research assistant and senior assistant at the Institute for Philosophy there. In 1961 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. ( About the importance of the direct social character of work for the development of the socialist consciousness of the class of cooperative farmers ) and completed his habilitation in 1965. From 1966 to 1989 he worked at the Academy for Social Sciences at the Central Committee of the SED and headed the local institute for Marxist- leninist philosophy. When Dr. phil. habil. he held this position as a professor of Marxist-Leninist philosophy. As chairman of the Scientific Council for Philosophy, Hahn was responsible for the coordination, central planning and ideological control of philosophical research in the 1970s and 1980s.

In the 1960s Hahn was involved in establishing sociological research in the GDR. His early work contributed to legitimizing the disciplinary independence of sociology, which was officially classified as “bourgeois science” until the early 1960s, in the Marxist-Leninist understanding of science. From 1976 he was a candidate and from 1981 a member of the Central Committee of the SED . Hahn repeatedly counted the works of Stalin among the classics of Marxism-Leninism. After the SED was renamed PDS , he remained a member. In 1990 he was forced to retire with the winding-up of the institute and took early retirement. He lives as a freelance writer in Berlin .
