The Mucirama ( Museo Civico Raffaele Marrocco ) is a museum in the town of Piedimonte Matese in the Campania region ( Italy ).

The museum

The Mucirama is located in the former complex of the San Tommaso D'Aquin monastery from 1934, which was built at the behest of Sveva Sanseverino and served as a shelter for the needy and pilgrims who were cared for by the Order of the Dominicans. The structure has had various uses over the centuries: first as a monastery, then as a garrison for the Bourbon army, before the building was used as a school and finally, from 1927, as a museum.

The museum is divided into two different areas: on the ground floor is the cloister, which was decorated in the late 16th and 17th centuries and decorated with frescoes . It is a representation in the fashion of the late Renaissance, inspired by the ornamentation of the buildings of ancient Rome. The grotesque elements consist of a combination of human or animal figures, fantastic or monstrous tendrils with plant motifs and geometric shapes that are intertwined. There is also an epigraphic collection on the ground floor .

Library

The library of the museum emerged from donations from citizens of the city. It was organized and inventoried by the museum's founder and first director, Raffaele Marrocco. The collection contains u. a. Documents on parchment from the 13th to 15th centuries, manuscripts and early prints, musical autographs and documents.

Archaeological Department

The permanent exhibition “Gens Fortissima Italiae” on prehistory and archeology is accessible via the cloister . The objects on display span the period from prehistory to the Samnites .

One of the most important artefacts is the votive statue of the "Corridore del Monte Cila" (= the runner from Monte Cila), a bronze statuette that was excavated in 1928 in Piedimonte Matese. It depicts a young athlete with a ribbon closed in a circle in his right hand.

Historical and art history department

The “Raffaele Marrocco” collection is kept on the first floor of the museum. It includes objects and works of art that document the extraordinarily rich history of the city. Paintings, sculptures (busts), ceramics, dolls, coins and weapons as well as fossils from the area are on display. The collection, which is still strongly shaped by the interests of the founder, and the accommodation of which no longer corresponds to the latest findings in museology, has so far only been scientifically explored to a limited extent.
