Maarten de Jonge (born March 9, 1985 in Oldenzaal ) is a Dutch cyclist .

Athletic career

Maarten de Jonge began his career in 2004 at the Team Fuji Bikes . In 2007 he drove for the Time-Van Hemert team and in 2008 he moved to the Wielergroep Beveren 2000 team . In his first year there, he won the one-day race Romsée-Stavelot-Romsée . He also won a stage at the Tour de la Province de Luxembourg , the Trois Jours de Cherbourg and the Tour de Moselle . For the 2010 season he moved to the cycling team Jo Piels , where he won the Ronde van Limburg . In 2011 Maarten de Jonge drove for the British Continental Team Endura Racing , with which he won the team time trial at the Czech Cycling Tour . In 2014 he joined the Terengganu Cycling Team from Malaysia and won a stage of the Tour of Thailand for the team .

In the same year he was very lucky twice. He actually wanted to fly Malaysia Airlines flight 370 on March 8, 2014 , but decided at short notice for a flight that would take off 50 minutes earlier. The plane has since been considered lost. Furthermore, he had also booked a seat for Malaysia Airlines flight 17 , but shortly before departure he rebooked to another and, for him, financially cheaper aircraft and thus escaped the shooting down of the Boeing 777-200ER over the Ukraine.
