The MacBook is a notebook from the US company Apple , which was presented on March 9, 2015. It differs significantly from the first MacBook series , which was offered as an entry-level model from 2006 to 2012. The "Retina" MacBooks, on the other hand, are particularly compact and light and can be seen as the successor to the MacBook Air with an 11 "screen.

The MacBook introduced new design elements that later in other series such as the MacBook Pro of the fourth generation and the MacBook Air the third were taken over generation. The changes included a new keyboard construction (“butterfly”) for a thinner construction, the use of USB-C as the only interface and the elimination of the illuminated polycarbonate logo, which was replaced by a polished metal logo. A pressure-sensitive touchpad (Force Touch with Taptic Engine ) was also introduced. Other visual changes were an aluminum hinge cover and the model name on a black band below the screen.

The MacBook was the first aluminum notebook from Apple to be available in different colors. In addition to the previous aluminum-silver, the device was available in gold and "space gray", later models partly also in rose gold.

Production was discontinued in 2019 without a direct successor.

Specifications

The MacBook has a 12-inch Retina screen with a resolution of 2304 × 1440 pixels and has a single USB Type C port (for data transfer and for charging the device) and a jack plug connection for headphones as the only ports.

In all models, energy-saving processors were used that were operated without fans. As a result, the original models had a lower performance than the MacBook Air models from 2015. Only the models from 2017 were more powerful. Processor, RAM and SSD are firmly soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded later.

Innovations in early 2016

During the facelift at the beginning of 2016, the processors were essentially updated. Skylake processors are now used instead of Broadwell processors. Furthermore, the main memory is now accessed at 1866 MHz instead of 1600 MHz. The write speed of the SSD has also been increased by up to 90%. The rose gold case color was also introduced.

Innovations 2017

The MacBook got a facelift for WWDC 2017. The processors of the Kaby Lake architecture are replacing those from the previous year, whereby Intel is now staggering these in m3, i5 and i7 instead of m3, m5 and m7. For the first time there was an option with 16 GB of RAM. The keyboard is based on the improved second-generation butterfly mechanism. The SSDs used are 50% faster compared to their predecessor. Overall, the system performance has been significantly increased compared to the previous models.

Innovations 2018

With the introduction of the third generation MacBook Air in October 2018, the colors of the MacBook were also adjusted. The color rose gold has been deleted. Instead, the color “gold” is now a little warmer. This new gold color was already known from the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus and the 6th generation iPad .

On July 9, 2019, the sale of the MacBook was stopped. Since the MacBook Air Retina was reduced by 100 € that day as part of a facelift, it costs 1499 € with 256 GB of memory, which is as much as the MacBook Retina with the same memory. The MacBook Air offers newer processors, Touch ID , the Apple T2 coprocessor, and True Tone for the same price .
