Macieira is a Portuguese brandy .

history

Jose Guilherme Macieira founded the company named after him in 1865 to trade in spirits, wine vinegar and olive oil in addition to wine. In 1885, after a study trip to Cognac and after his son José Maria Macieira had studied oenology there, he began to make a cognac with the Conhaque Macieira . This was before the regional reservation of the name as a protected designation of origin today . The drink was u. a. at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and in 1915 at the commemoration of the opening of the Panama Canal a year earlier.

Macieira has been part of the Pernod Ricard Group since 2001 .

Manufacturing

The autochthonous Portuguese grape varieties Arinto , Periquita , Trincadeira and Fernão Pires are used. The brandy obtained from it is then aged in oak barrels for at least six months. In addition to its most famous version with 36, it is also offered with 40 and 43 % vol .

Key figures

Macieira is the market leader in the brandy sector in Portugal, with 55% market share and 2 million liters sold (2008). In view of the limited further growth opportunities domestically, the company recently focused on exports, with Brazil and China in particular as future markets.

Today the drink is sold in 29 countries on all five continents.
