Fernão Pires is an autochthonous white wine from Portugal .

distribution

It is widespread in almost all areas of Portugal and in 1999 was ranked first among the white wine varieties in Portugal with around 23,160 hectares of vineyards . It is the dominant variety in the Bairrada area , where it is also called 'Maria Gomes'. It is recommended to cultivate them in the regions of Trás-os-Montes , Beira Litoral , Ribatejo , Oeste , Alentejo and the Azores . It is also approved in the Douro , Minho , Beira Interior Sul and Beira Interior Norte regions . There are other cultivated areas in Australia and South Africa (approx. 290 hectares).

'Fernão Pires' is believed to be an old Portuguese grape variety .

Variety characteristics

The grapes are medium-sized, broadly shouldered and mostly conical in shape. The berries have a nutmeg flavor and are medium-sized and oval with a green-yellow color. It has an early shoot with medium strong growth and later maturity. Because it shoots early, it is susceptible to frost. 'Fernão Pires' is very susceptible to real life ( Oidium ) and downy mildew ( Peronospra ). This grape variety prefers fertile soils.

Wine

This versatile vine produces fruity, aromatic and acidic wines with a lot of bouquet . They often taste like fresh green pepper or cooked cabbage. These are mostly used in blends , where they add acid and alcohol. It proves its versatility in the development of sparkling wine (in the Bairrada area) and noble sweet white wines . On the Setúbal peninsula , the 'Fernão Pires' variety produces a must with a very high sugar content or must weight on the sandy soils .
