Maciej Sarbiewski
Mathias Casimir Sarbiewski SJ (Polish Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski , Latin Mathias Casimirus Sarbievius ; born February 24, 1595 in Sarbiewo near Płońsk in Masovia , † April 2, 1640 in Warsaw ) was a Jesuit and neo-Latin writer.
He studied from 1622 at Vilnius University , where he taught rhetoric from 1627 . After his doctorate in philosophy (1632) he was dean of the university from 1633 to 1635 and in 1636 he received his doctorate in theology. He achieved Europe-wide fame and recognition with his book "Lyricorum libri tres" ( Three books of poetry ), published in Cologne in 1625 , which has been translated into many languages and earned its author the nickname " Horace des Christianity". In addition, from 1622-25, as chairman of a papal commission in Rome, he had won the favor of Pope Urban VIII , who distinguished him with a laurel wreath .
