Macrophya militaris is a plant wasp from the family of sawfly (Tenthredinidae).
features
The species reaches a body length of 11 to 13 millimeters. The basic color of the plant wasps is black.
The female can be described as follows: The head is black. Only the clypeus , the labrum and most of the mandibles are yellowish. The thorax is predominantly black. The scutellum , the post-scutellum, part of the tegulae and the extreme corners of the pronotum are white. The wings are slightly darkened. The wing veins and the pterostigma are brown. The anterior and middle tarsal limbs are predominantly yellow. The back of the femora , tibia, and anterior and middle tarsi is black. The posterior limbs are completely black. The trochanters , the base of the femora, and often a spot in front of the ends of the tibia, are white. The coxae are black. However, the coxae of the front and middle legs can have a white crown. The abdomen is predominantly black. The 3rd to 5th abdominal segment is reddish in color. The 6th and 7th tergite have a white spot on each side.
In the males the scutellum is spotted white. The first hind artery link is black, the remaining links black. The anterior and middle femora have black line drawings on the back.
distribution
Macrophya militaris is common in Central and Southern Europe. The species is absent from the British Isles and Scandinavia.
Way of life
The plant wasps appear in May. They are often seen on hedges. As food plants the larvae are blackberry , raspberry , wild strawberry ( Fragaria vesca ) and dog rose ( Rosa canina ) called. The larvae feed on the leaves of these plants.
