Madagasikara is a genus of tropical freshwater snails fromthe Pachychilidae family .
features
Madagasikara species usually have relatively large and towering bowls and often have a very pronounced sculpture made up of either spiral or axial elements. The presence of a breathing channel on the lower inside of the shell opening is particularly characteristic. Like all representatives of the Pachychilidae , the species of the genus have an oval, multispiral and almost concentric operculum . Most species are oviparous , but at least one species, M. vivipara , is ovoviviparous . Females of this species hold eggs and developing juveniles in the mantle cavity.
Taxonomy
The name of the genus is derived from the Malagasy word for Madagascar . In earlier works, species of this group were assigned to other genera, such as Melania , Pirena or, in particular, Melanatria . However, for taxonomic reasons , these names are not available for these Malagasy snails .
distribution
Madagasikara is endemic to Madagascar and occurs on the entire island, except in the extreme, rather dry south, in predominantly fast-flowing, oxygen-rich rivers.
