Madeleine Cunnane Dean (born June 6, 1959 in Glenside , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). She has been a Member of the State of Pennsylvania in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . Dean served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from April 24, 2012 through November 30, 2018 .

Life

Madeleine Dean was raised in Glenside, Pennsylvania, the youngest of seven children, and graduated from Abington Senior High School . Dean was already active in local politics at the age of 18. She studied law at La Salle University , where she earned her bachelor's degree. She then studied at Pennsylvania State University and Widener University , where she earned the degree of Juris Doctor . After graduating, Dean worked for a law firm, and later she was a lecturer at La Salle University. Madeleine Dean is married to PJ Cunnane and has three sons and two grandchildren. She lives in Jenkintown with her husband .

Dean served on the Abington Township Council . In 2012 she was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. In her election campaign, Dean addressed, among other things, easier access to medical care, a reform of the judicial system, equal rights and actions against armed violence. After Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in December 2012 she founded together with the representatives Dan Frankel Committee PA SAFE , a coalition of advocates of containment of illegal weapons. In 2015 Dean was appointed by Governor Tom Wolf to his women's commission.

In 2017 Madeleine Dean announced that she was running for Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania in the elections the following year. After a reorganization of the Pennsylvania congressional constituencies in February 2018, in which Dean's place of residence fell from the thirteenth to the fourth congressional constituency, and since the previous Representative Brendan Boyle changed constituencies, Madeleine Dean withdrew her running for vice governor and instead ran for the seat of the thirteenth Pennsylvania Congressional Constituency in the United States House of Representatives . On May 15, 2018, she prevailed against two other candidates in the Democratic Party's primary election , and in the congressional elections on November 6, 2018 , Dean prevailed against Republican Dan David with 63.5 percent of the vote.

On January 3, 2019, Madeleine Dean took office in the House of Representatives. She is a member of the Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on the Judiciary .
