Madeleine Schuppli

Madeleine Schuppli (born June 29, 1965 in Zurich ) is a Swiss art historian , curator and author . From 2007 to 2020 she was director of the Aargauer Kunsthaus . Since 2020 she has been Head of Visual Arts at the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia .

Live and act

Madeleine Schuppli studied art history , classical archeology and church history at the Universities of Geneva, Hamburg and Zurich and completed a Master of Advanced Studies in cultural management at the University of Basel. Initially working as an exhibition assistant at various museums in Switzerland and Germany, she became curator of the Kunsthalle Basel in 1996 , where she was responsible for exhibitions by Mona Hatoum and Maurizio Cattelan , among others . From 2000 to 2007 she worked as director for the Kunstmuseum Thun . The renovation of the museum and exhibitions with Mark Grotjahn or Christian Marclay were guaranteed by her. Madeleine Schuppli was director of the Aargauer Kunsthaus from 2007 to 2020 , where she realized numerous group and solo exhibitions, including on Fiona Tan , Sophie Taeuber-Arp , cinema and art or Swiss Pop Art . In 2009 she initiated the innovative exhibition series for young art CARAVAN to promote up-and-coming Swiss artists. She is also responsible for an active collection policy with a focus on contemporary works of Swiss art and a dialogical presentation of the holdings. She has been Head of Visual Arts at Pro Helvetia since February 2020 .

Since 1999 she has been an expert in art in building committees on behalf of the City of Zurich , the Raiffeisen Bank and the City of Basel, among others , and is represented on numerous juries for art prizes.

Schuppli is a member of the Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art (AICA), the International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art (IKT), the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the Association of Art Historians in Switzerland (VKKS) and the Association of Swiss Art Museums (VSK / AMAS).
