The Madrid Arena is a multi-purpose hall in the Spanish capital, Madrid . The event arena designed by the Spanish architects Estudio Cano Lasso offers up to 10,276 seats. The retractable grandstands make it possible to adapt the hall to different sports, events and concerts.

history

The arena was built in 2002 on the site of an old open-air facility called Rockódromo , which was mainly used for honing. The new hall was designed primarily for the 2012 Olympic Games .

From 2002 to 2008 the arena was the venue for the Madrid Masters in tennis , but from 2009 it was replaced by the Caja Mágica . Both 2006 and 2007 the WTA Tour Championships took place in the hall. From 2005 to 2010 the sports complex served as the home of the basketball club CB Estudiantes . In 2007 the Madrid Arena was also one of the venues for the men's European basketball championship .

On November 1, 2012, during a Halloween party with the famous DJ Steve Aoki in the Madrid Arena , a mass panic broke out that claimed five lives. As it turned out in the course of the investigation, the organizers sold significantly more tickets than the 10,600 or so that were allowed; Overall, around twice as many visitors are said to have been in the hall at the time of the accident.

Location and public transport

The Madrid Arena is located on the south-eastern edge of the Casa de Campo park and can be reached via the metro lines 6 ( Alto de Extremadura station ) and 10 ( Lago station ) as well as the bus lines 31, 33, 36, 39 and 65.
