Mae Wheeler

Mae Wheeler (born May 14, 1934 in Memphis , Tennessee , † June 15, 2011 in Maryland Heights , Missouri ) was an American singer and music organizer.

Live and act

Wheeler moved her family to Richmond Heights when she was five years old. In 1948 she participated in a New York amateur competition. She graduated from Douglass School in Webster Groves in 1951 , married and had five children. After her husband Jimmy Lee Wheeler died in 1964, she first managed to get by in various jobs such as cook, washer and cleaner, before starting a career as a singer, initially as an assistant to Jeanne Trevor . It had its first success in the 1960s in the Gaslight Square entertainment district of St. Louis . Although Mae Wheeler saw herself not as a jazz singer, but as a songstylist, she received the title Lady Jazz ; their song material consisted mostly of jazz, blues , pop, rock and Broadway titles. In the 1970s and 1980s she made regular guest appearances at Club Hannegan's , later at Brandt’s in University City , as well as in restaurants, lounges and around St. Louis. During her career she performed a. a. with Pearl Bailey , Count Basie , Sonny Stitt , Mitch Miller and Arthur Prysock . She released two albums under her own name, Live at the Sheldon (2000) and Just Friends (2002). She was also known as a music organizer; so in 1996 she produced The Divas Show . As a result, she created a scholarship program for young musicians and singers from St. Louis. Her last production was Unforgettable Legends (2010) at the Sheldon Concert Hall . She died in June 2011 after prolonged colon cancer and leukemia .

Awards

Wheeler received u. a. 2011 a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis .
