Magdalena Maihoefer

Magdalena Maihoefer (* 1959 ), also working under the pseudonym George Tabasco , is a German visual artist . She lives and works in Rhineland-Palatinate and Liguria .

Career

Maihoefer grew up in a rural area and began to paint intensively at an early age, although she did not visit museums or exhibitions in her childhood. From 1982 to 1985 she trained as a glass painter and attended the school for color and design in Stuttgart. From 1996 she designed furniture for an Italian company in Pesaro and carpets for a German-Nepalese company for a longer period of time. She also taught repeatedly at the University for Integrated Product Design in Coburg. Maihoefer has been exhibiting glass objects internationally since 1989, but later and to this day massive, mostly minimalist wooden objects that are arranged and cumulative to enhance their effect. Among other things, she exhibited in the World Trade Center in Dubai (article in the Khaleej Times from September 26, 1998 and The Gulf Today from September 25, 1998) and produced numerous works for the Expo 2000 (German Pavilion). She got to know Lambert Maria Winterberger , Martin Kippenberger , Wolfgang Flatz and the gallery owner Hans-Jürgen Müller , for whom she made an installation (a movable glass carpet measuring 6 × 9 meters) on the Mariposa site on Tenerife in 1998 and 1999 .

In the past Maihoefer made collages , drawings and sculptures , mostly objects made of glass and glass-metal. Maihoefer has received several awards, including the state prizes of Baden-Württemberg (1994) and Hesse (1996). For Maihoefer, however, after many years the material glass was exhausted and she could only develop to a limited extent with glass and was looking for a new material to expand her radius of action. After a long break, Maihoefer began to work on wooden formats. Often atypical materials can be found in your oeuvre and they come into their own in the symbiosis with wood, oil, tar, etc. As the main motifs, Maihoefer immersed himself in monochrome leaf metal surfaces, mainly 24-carat gold surfaces, but also depictions of Neo-Expressionism and abstract figurative motifs. Representing the topic of gold, she creates so-called "claims", which are numbered consecutively from the number 34 onwards. These claims refer to the gold rush town of Dawson City. Her works can neither be tied to a specific art theory and associations, nor to an iconography.

What was planned in Imperia for an exhibition as an experiment and initially as a study copy, developed as a conclusion and consequence also under the pseudonym George Tabasco from 2018 as a new consistent direction in her work.
