Magliocco Canino

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Magliocco Canino is a red variety , which in the Italian region of Calabria is cultivated. The variety was once one of the most common red varieties in Calabria, but is now only grown on approx. 1500 hectares . It is particularly recommended in the provinces of Catanzaro and Cosenza , but is also grown in other parts of Calabria. Small stocks are also known in Switzerland . (9.7 hectares, as of 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG)

Maglioco Canino is often blended with the Gaglioppo variety (to which it may be related). Confusingly, she is sometimes also known by the synonym Gaglioppo.

A well-known wine from Maglioco Canino is the Rubino Winery Vignaioli del Pollino. It contains 90 percent Magliocco Canino and 10 percent Aglianico .

It is unclear whether Magliocco Canino is identical to the very rare grape variety Magliocco Dolce from the Ciro region in the Calabrian province of Crotone . The Librandi winery has been pressing the high-class single-variety wine Magno Megonio from this for several years .

Synonyms

The Magliocco Canino grape variety is also known under the names Gaglioppo, Magliocco ovale and Magliuacculu.
